SUPERIOR, Wis. – No. 15 Saint John's hockey scored three unanswered goals to earn a rare 3-1 win at Wisconsin-Superior on Friday, Nov. 8.
The win was just SJU's second in the last 19 meetings (2-16-1 record) against UWS. Coincidentally, the only other Johnnie win during the previous 18-game span was a 4-1 decision on Jan. 14, 2006, in Superior.
The Johnnies (2-1 overall) controlled the game with a 30-16 shot advantage, including a 23-12 edge through the first two periods. SJU's penalty kill rejected all five Yellowjacket power plays and is now 14-for-15 (93.3 percent) through three games this season. SJU finished seventh in all of NCAA Division III with a penalty-kill rate at 86.9 percent (86-for-99) last season.
Superior (0-1 overall) gained a 1-0 lead 4:11 into the game off the stick of Jordan Shockley.
Sophomore Tyson Fulton (Champlin, Minn.) tied the game at the 9:59 mark of the first period with his first goal as a Johnnie, while freshman Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) tallied the assist for his first collegiate point and senior Axel Ramsgard (Gothenburg, Sweden) added the other.
Junior John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 8:38 into the second period. Senior Justin Hochsprung (Alexandria, Minn.) and junior Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
Becker earned his second assist of the night when freshman Dan McNamara (Grand Rapids, Mich.) padded the Johnnies' lead with 6:16 remaining for his first collegiate goal. Junior Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.) tallied the second assist.
Sophomore goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 15 saves to improve to 2-0 on the young season and 12-2-1 in his last 15 starts going back to last season.
The Johnnies travel to face top-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire, a rematch of last year's NCAA-Tournament game, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Hobbs Ice Center. The tilt is SJU's third on the road against the Blugolds in its last 21 games overall.
