SJU Earns MIAC-Playoff Berth With 5-0 Victory

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Saint John's advanced to the four-team MIAC Playoffs with a convincing 5-0 win at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Nov. 2, in Moorhead.

SJU (8-6-3, 6-2-2 MIAC), the fourth seed, travels to face top-seeded Gustavus Adolphus at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, in St. Peter. The Gusties (13-2-1, 10-0-0 MIAC) defeated the Johnnies 4-0 with four second-half goals Sept. 28 in Collegeville. SJU posted a 5-0-2 MIAC record since that loss.

Senior Matt Carson (Waconia, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead 29:35 into the match. Junior David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) sent a cross pass to Carson, who sent the one-timer shot to the back of the net for his second goal of the year. Sophomore Alex Niederloh was also credited with an assist.

Wee added to the lead with his sixth goal of the season 8:07 into the second half, with an assists to Niederloh and freshman Nick Van Marter (Portland, Ore./Cleveland), and added another 3:02 later from senior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and Van Marter.

Senior Elliott Olsen (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) made it 4-0 with his first goal of the season, and first since his freshman year, at the 68:25 mark of the match. Junior Nicholas DeVetter (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) earned the assist.

Sophomore Robert Deetz (Owatonna, Minn.) ended the scoring with a breakaway goal, his second of the season, with 6:10 remaining on a pass from freshman Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory).

Senior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made five saves in the first 70:10 of the match before being relieved by sophomore Alec Almquist (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), who made two saves in the final 19:50 to share the shutout.
