ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's broke its 0-for-20 streak on the power play with three goals on the man advantage in a 7-4 win over St. Olaf on Saturday, Nov. 16, in St. Cloud.
Freshman Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) opened the scoring with his first collegiate goal 3:11 into the game, with assists going to senior Axel Ramsgard (Gothenburg, Sweden) and junior John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.).
The Johnnies (3-3, 1-1 MIAC) tallied a pair of power-play goals in the first period. Junior Dave Mylrea (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) found the back of the net at the 5:39 later and senior Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) made it 3-0 with nine seconds left.
St. Olaf (1-5, 1-1 MIAC) turned up the heat in the second period with two goals in the first 4:19 of the frame. The two teams combined for 20 penalties and five goals in the second period alone.
Becker responded 3:13 later, but a goal from Dan Cecka, his fifth of the young season, cut the Johnnies' lead to 4-3 with 10:07 left.
Sophomore Tyson Fulton (Champlin, Minn.) gave SJU a two-goal cushion with his second goal of the year at the 12:26 mark.
David Rath brought the Oles to within one goal once again, on a rebound from his brother, Mark, 3:55 into the third.
Sophomore Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.) scored the Johnnies' third power-play goal of the game with 3:31 remaining, with an assist going to Becker for his third point of the night.
Junior Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.) ended the scoring with a long empty-net goal at the 19:03 mark.
Senior Mitch Thompson (Onalaska, Wis.) made 25 saves to record his first collegiate win between the pipes for SJU.
SJU returns to the road for a pair of games at Saint Mary's next Friday (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday (2 p.m.), Nov. 22-23.
