A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (4-6-2, 2-2-1 MIAC) fell to Wisconsin-Superior by a 2-1 score in non-conference play Oct. 8 at Haws Field in Collegeville. Superior gained a 1-0 lead with 1:13 remaining in the first half off a corner kick and later took advantage of a shot off the hands of SJU senior goalkeeper Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) to gain a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute (56:27). Senior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) cut the Johnnies' deficit to 2-1 with a corner kick that evaded the traffic in front and curved inside the far post in the 63rd minute (62:17). Brutger made nine saves in the loss for SJU. Shots were even at 21 apiece, though the Yellowjackets held a slight 11-9 advantage on goal. Senior Matt Carson (Waconia, Minn.) nearly gave SJU an early 1-0 lead but his shot rattled off the crossbar 13 minutes into the match.

COBORN ENDS STREAK, CLIMBS CHARTS: Coborn's goal in Tuesday's loss to Superior, his fifth tally of the season, was the 25th of his career, which is good for fifth in school history. He is now six points behind Tyler Bosch (2001-04) for fourth on the Johnnies' all-time points list with 80 (25g/30a). The goal also ended the longest pointless streak of his collegiate career since game Nos. 6-9 of his freshman season in 2010.

MIAC SCHEDULE REMAINING: The Johnnies have five matches regular-season matches remaining in the MIAC, three of which are against teams below them in the conference standings: vs. Bethel (Oct. 12), vs. St. Thomas (Oct. 16), at Augsburg (Oct. 19), vs. Saint Mary's (Oct. 26) and at Concordia-Moorhead (Nov. 2).

A LOOK AT THE ROYALS: Bethel (4-7-0, 1-4-0 MIAC) ended a four-game skid, in which it was out-scored 16-4, with a 3-0 shutout of Coe (Iowa) this past Tuesday (Oct. 8). Junior Matthew Pisarski leads the team in goals (8) and points (18), while freshman Danny Jaderholm has a team-leading four assists. Junior goalkeeper A.J. Syler is 3-3-0 with a 2.55 GAA and a .641 save percentage (25 saves) in six matches, while senior Chris Scott is 1-3-0 with a 3.00 GAA and a .625 save percentage (20 saves).

LAST FALL: Junior Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.), who suffered a season-ending injury during 2013 preseason practice, tallied a hat trick as the Johnnies earned a 5-0 win at Bethel last Oct. 10 (2012) in Arden Hills. Scudder gave SJU an early 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season 12:07 into the match. Coborn made it 2-0 with his third goal of the year 5:40 later. Scudder increased SJU's lead to 3-0 with his second goal of the afternoon 9:37 into the second half and wrapped up the hat trick with an unassisted tally 1:15 later. The hat trick is the first for a Johnnie since Coborn tallied three goals against Macalester on Oct. 26, 2010. Bethel earned a red card with 27:32 left and played the rest of the match a man short on the field. Sophomore Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made two saves in the first half to earn the win and improve to 3-4-0 on the season. Brutger played a flawless second half to share the shutout. SJU out-shot the Royals 18-5 in the match, including a 10-2 margin on goal.

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 28-6-4 against Bethel since 1977, including a 14-2-2 record in Collegeville. SJU has out-scored the Royals by a combined 26-8 margin in the last eight meetings overall (7-0-1 record).
