A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: The Johnnies (3-3-2, 1-1-0 MIAC) suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in overtime at Gustavus Adolphus Sept. 22 in St. Peter. Sophomore Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.) gave SJU the lead first half collecting his second goal of the year, with assists from freshman Paul Wageman (Roseville, Minn./DeLaSalle) and junior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral), at the 39:34 mark of the first half. GAC's Zach Brown tied the game at the 70:18 mark and tallied the game-winning goal off a corner kick from David Lilly 5:57 into overtime. Freshman Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) made 12 saves in the loss, his first MIAC start in net. Brown scored both goals, including the game-winner 2:55 into the second overtime, in last year's 2-1 win for GAC in Collegeville.
A LOOK AT THE AUGGIES: Augsburg (6-3-1, 2-1-0 MIAC) fell to St. Thomas 2-1 last Saturday. UST outshot the Auggies by a 16-9 margin, including a 10-2 advantage in the first half, as the Tommies took a 2-0 halftime lead. Augsburg is 1-3 in its last four matches with all three losses decided by one goal. Sophomore Scott Clinton leads the team in goals (4) and points (10), while seniors Chad Gilmer and Josh Sweeney boast three assists each. Junior Clayton Lynch is 5-3-1 with a 0.98 GAA and a .756 save percentage in net so far this fall.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The Auggies were ranked ninth in the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) North Region rankings released Sept. 25. Loras (Iowa) received the top spot, followed by Wisconsin-Whitewater and Carleton. Gustavus (No. 5), St. Thomas (No. 8) and St. Olaf (No. 10) were also listed.
LAST YEAR'S MATCH: Augsburg took advantage of its fast-track surface under the lights to post a 3-0 win over SJU on last Sept. 27 in Minneapolis. The Auggies took an early 1-0 lead 7:36 into the match and added two more in the 38th and 41st minutes.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 28-4-4 against the Auggies since 1978, including a 14-1-2 mark in Collegeville. SJU, however, is 1-4-1 in the last six meetings with a 1-1-1 mark in Collegeville.
