MORRIS, Minn. – Saint John's started the 2012 season in fine fashion with a 3-0 win over Minnesota-Morris on Friday, Aug. 31.

The Johnnies out-shot the Cougars 11-1 in the first half, 3-1 on goal, but could not find the back of the net. Intermission proved to be what SJU needed, however, as the visitors tallied two goals in the first five minutes of the second half.

“We started to move the ball a little quicker there in the second half,” head coach John Haws said. “That, and we played the ball when we could, rather than when we had to.”

Sophomore David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake), a 2011 All-MIAC second team selection, launched a long shot past the goalkeeper to give SJU a 1-0 lead 1:05 into the half. Classmate Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) was credited with the assist.

Junior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) padded the lead 4:14 later on a header off a cross from sophomore Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.).

A two-time All-MIAC first-team pick, Coborn was responsible, in part, for the third and final goal at 74:34 of the match. He crossed a drive in the box that went off a defender and to the corner of the net.

Junior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made two saves to earn the shutout, the third of his collegiate career. An NCAA Tournament team a year ago, UMM mustered only four shots in the contest (SJU held an 18-4 advantage).

The Johnnies play host to No. 19 Luther (Iowa) for their home opener this Sunday, Sept. 2. The match is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Clemens Stadium.
