ST. PETER, Minn. – Saint John's ended its 2011-12 season with a 3-1 loss at Gustavus Adolphus in the MIAC Playoff Semifinals on Saturday, Feb. 25, in St. Peter.
The Johnnies (11-13-2, 9-7-0 MIAC) looked to have tied the game at 2-2 on a shot from sophomore Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.), on the power play with under 1:40 to play, but the goal was waved off despite the goal judge's lighting of the lamp.
Gustavus (15-6-5, 9-5-3 MIAC) added a shorthanded, empty-net goal with 21 seconds remaining.
Ryan Johnson gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead with a fluky goal 4:51 into the second period. Johnson unleashed a shot from behind the goal line and it ricocheted to the back of the net.
Junior Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) tied the game at 1-1 with his team-leading 14th goal of the season with 32 seconds left in the second. Freshman Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) and sophomore Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play.
Johnson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal 1:57 into the third period.
Senior Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made 17 saves in the loss. SJU held a 40-26 advantage on faceoffs and outshot GAC 27-20 in the contest, but did not convert on either of the game's two power-play opportunities.
The win is just the fourth in 17 games at home for Gustavus against the Johnnies (4-10-3).
