Johnnies Lose Lead, Earn Overtime Victory

MEQUON, Wis. – Saint John's saw its 4-1 third-period lead dissolve before earning a 5-4 win in overtime over Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday, Dec. 8, in Mequon, Wis.

The Johnnies (4-4-1, 1-3-0 MIAC) broke a 1-1 tie with three consecutive goals to gain a 4-1 lead before the Falcons (4-9, 4-4 MCHA) rattled off three third-period goals, including the game-tying goal with six seconds remaining. A power play and extra attacker gave CUW a 6-on-4 advantage on the ice with 47 seconds left.

Junior Jason Johnson's (Duluth, Minn.) first goal of the season, 1:27 into overtime, gave SJU the victory. Sophomore Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) and freshman Shane Wolden (Maple Grove, Minn.) earned the assists.

Concordia found the scoreboard first 9:49 into the game before senior Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) tied it with his fourth goal of the season 3:56 later, with an assist going to sophomore John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.).

Haeg gave SJU a 2-1 lead with a shorthanded goal and senior co-captain Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) added a power-play tally 3:17 later. Phil Johnson made it 4-1 2:07 into the third.

The Falcons cut their deficit to two goals 5:42 after Johnson's tally and added a pair of late power-play goals (16:36 and 19:54).

Freshman Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 17 saves to improve to 3-2-0 on the season for SJU.

The Johnnies return home for a 7 p.m. non-conference game against St. Thomas on Thursday, Dec. 13, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
