Division II St. Cloud State Makes Friday Visit to the Palaestra Pool

Saint John's returns to the pool with a 6 p.m. dual meet against Division II St. Cloud State on Friday, Dec. 7, at the Warner Palaestra Pool in Collegeville.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's led the participating NCAA Division III schools in 11 of the 17 events the team competed in at the two-day University of Minnesota Jean Freeman Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Minneapolis. Team scores were not calculated. Freshman Preston Marsh (Petersburg, Alaska) was the first Division III swimmer to touch the wall in the 100-yard freestyle (47.73) to take second and did the same in 100-yard breaststroke (59.13) to take fourth Saturday. He was the first Division III swimmer to finish in the 200-yard individual medley, claiming fifth with a time of 1:59.13, Friday night.
Freshman Braden McCormack (Rosemount, Minn.) finished sixth, first among Division III, in the 100-yard backstroke (53.27) and ninth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.94). Freshmen Nolan Bauer (Helena, Mont.) and Evan Maxwell (Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Stillwater Area) provided a fine showing in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing fourth (17:52.44) and fifth (18:04.98), respectively. Junior Philip English (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) followed in seventh (18:17.34). Maxwell also claimed 10th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.77) and 15th, first among Division III, in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.19). Sophomore Logan Arnold (Moorhead, Minn.) took sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (48.39) and eighth, first among Division III, in the 50-yard freestyle (21.69). Junior Connor Triggs (Edina, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) finished seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (48.92). Four Johnnie relay teams led all Division III schools in their respective events: 200-yard freestyle relay (fifth, 1:26.03; Arnold, Joe Duxbury, Marsh, Triggs), 200-yard medley relay (fifth, 1:35.99; Arnold, Duxbury, Marsh, McCormack), 400-yard medley relay (3:34.42; Arnold, Duxbury, Marsh, McCormack) and 800-yard freestyle relay (fifth, 7:25.81; English, Maxwell, Paul Knaak, Connor Reilly). Freshmen Ben Studer (Delano, Minn.) and Jack Getty (Excelsior, Minn./Chanhassen) claimed 10th (182.65) and 11th (168.40) in the 1-meter dive, respectively.

A LOOK AT THE HUSKIES: St. Cloud State had a successful weekend in Rochester, winning 12 of the 20 events. Jake Stoll set the new 100 free school record with a time of 45.03. He was also a member of the record-setting 200 medley relay squad that finished in 1:30.52. There were addition school records set. Alex Bryson set a new record in the 500 free with a time of 4.30.00. Napoleon Howell set a new record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.19. The men's 200 medley team ( Bob Simson, Napoleon Howell, Jake Stoll and Jake Hausauer) set a new record with a time of 1:30.52. Chris White took home first place in both the one and three meter dives for the men. White won the one-meter dive with a national qualifying score of 511.30. White won the three-meter dive with a score of 532.06. Tyler Magalis placed second in the one meter while Luke Weber placed second in the three meter.

THE LAST MEETING: Division II-power St. Cloud State defeated Saint John's 147-73 last season in St. Cloud. Sophomore Connor Franta (La Crescent, Minn.) won the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.67), while Wes Schlichting '12 won the 3-meter dive and claimed third in the 1-meter board with identical marks of 274.75. Josh Seaburg '12 and Jesse Otis '12 went 2 (1:48.37)-3 (1:48.92) in the 200-yard freestyle. Otis finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.94, while Seaburg took third in the 100-yard backstroke (57.55).
