Special Teams Lead SJU to 4-2 Win Over St. Thomas

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's freshman goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 39 saves and the Johnnies' special teams tallied a pair of power-play goals and a shorthanded tally in a 4-2 non-conference win over MIAC-foe St. Thomas on Thursday, Dec. 13, in St. Cloud.

SJU (5-4-1, 1-3-0 MIAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to power-play goals from sophomores Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) in the first period, followed by an unassisted tally from classmate Nick Vatnsdal (Independence, Minn.), the first of his collegiate career, in the second.

Michael Krieg and Alex Altenbernd cut the UST (7-6-1, 5-1-0 MIAC) deficit to 3-2, 1:56 apart, in the second period.

Johnson lit the lamp for the second time of the night with a two-on-one shorthanded breakaway goal 1:32 into the third frame. He now has four goals in his last two games.

The Tommies out-shot SJU 41-26 in the game but were 0-for-4 on the power play.

The Johnnies host No. 13 Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) for Youth Hockey Day at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. All area youth hockey players wearing his or her jersey, or youth students wearing a shirt with their school's name on it, gains free admittance. Youth students can also get in free if they print off the flier that was sent to their school. An open skate with the Johnnies is also scheduled following the game.
