ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's battled to a 2-2 tie with Wisconsin-Stout on Friday, Nov. 2, at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud.
Kevin O'Donnell gave Stout a 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season, on the power play, with nine minutes left in the first period. The Blue Devils (0-2-2, 0-0-0 NCHA) turned an SJU 2-on-1 shorthanded opportunity by senior Tobias Linbro (Nykvarn, Sweden) and sophomore John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) and broke the scoreless tie with 17 seconds left on the man advantage.
Garrett Grimstad made it 2-0 with an even-strength goal 45 seconds into the second period.
Haeg cut the Blue Devils' lead in half with his fourth goal of the season, on the power play, with 15:26 left in the second period. Sophomore Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) and freshman Joe Freemark (Lakeville, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU (1-1-1, 0-0-0 MIAC).
Freshman Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) tied the game at 2-2 with 3:19 remaining, his first collegiate goal. Smith carried the puck up the right side, gained the corner and ripped a strong backhander off a Stout defender and into the goal. Freemark and junior Justin Hochsprung (Alexandria, Minn.) added the assists.
Junior Mitch Thompson (Onalaska, Wis.) made 27 saves in his SJU debut.
SJU held a 35-29 edge in shots and a 58-28 advantage on faceoffs in the contest. The home team amassed 10 shots on five power-play opportunities but capitalized on only one (Haeg).
The Johnnies play host to nationally-ranked St. Thomas for the conference opener next Thursday, Nov. 8. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
