MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – No. 15 St. Thomas turned a Saint John's turnover into a first-period goal and added two empty-net goals in the third to defeat Saint John's 3-0 on Friday, Nov. 9, in Mendota Heights.
Alex Niestrom took advantage of an SJU turnover with an unassisted goal 5:01 into the opening period, giving UST (3-1-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead. With the Johnnies possessing the puck in their own end, a pass across the faceoff circles went off a skate directly to Niestrom, who was all alone in front.
Following a scoreless second period, Niestrom tallied an empty-net goal with 1:47 remaining and Chris Cass ended the scoring with an empty-netter of his own with 29 seconds left.
Freshman Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 19 saves in the loss for SJU (1-3-1, 0-2-0 MIAC).
SJU was 0-for-3 on the power play to finish 0-for-7 in the two-game series. Shots were even at 18 apiece before the Tommies claimed the game's final four shots, including the two empty-net goals.
The Johnnies begin a two-game series at Augsburg next Thursday, Nov. 15, before returning home to host the Auggies for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday, Nov. 17, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
