A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (1-1, 0-0 MIAC) erupted for five goals in the second period, including a natural hat trick by sophomore John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.), as the Johnnies rolled to an 8-1 non-conference win over Saint Mary's Oct. 28 at the MIAC Showcase in Blaine. Sophomore Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead, on the power play, at the 16:12 mark of the opening period. Haeg and junior Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play. Senior Joe Harren (Warroad, Minn.) made it 2-0 with a power-play goal of his own 3:37 into the second period. Assists were credited to senior Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) and senior co-captain Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.), who added to the lead 2:49 later, eight seconds after another SJU power play expired. Harren and Pettit tallied the assists. Haeg followed with three consecutive even-strength goals over a span of 11:58 in the second period. He lit the lamp 1:03 after Palmiscno's tally and added his second (14:19) and third (18:27) goals. Sophomore Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) assisted on the first goal and freshman Shane Wolden (Maple Grove, Minn.) and junior Axel Ramsgard (Gothenburg, Sweden) assisted on the second. Ramsgard and sophomore Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.) assisted on the third tally. Senior co-captain Tobias Linbro (Nykvarn, Sweden) increased the Johnnies' lead to 7-0 with a breakaway goal 9:54 into the third period. Senta scored his first collegiate goal, on the power play, at the 12:19 mark. Haeg earned his second assist and fifth point of the game, while Gross had the other assist. Freshman Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 18 saves to earn the win in his first collegiate start for SJU.
A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: Wisconsin-Stout (0-2-1, 0-0-0 NCHA) tied Marian (Wis.) with a 3-3 score Oct. 20 before dropping a pair of games, 4-2 and 4-1, at Wisconsin-Eau Claire last weekend. Senior Ricky Doriott, a transfer from Division I Michigan Tech, leads the team with three points, all assists. Stout totaled 25 penalties for 75 minutes in the season's first three games. The Blue Devils' penalty kill, however, nullified 14 of the opponents' 16 power-play opportunities. Meanwhile, Stout has capitalized on only one of its 13 power-play chances.
THE LAST MEETING: Seven different Johnnies tallied a goal as Saint John's defeated Wisconsin-Stout for its first win of the 2011-12 season. Stout gained an early 1-0 lead 5:02 into the game, but Jason Johnson tied it 53 seconds later with his first varsity goal. The Blue Devils regained the lead at the 8:33 mark of the first period, but SJU answered with another game-tying goal, this time from Phil Johnson. Cossette gave SJU its first lead of the game with his first collegiate goal late in the opening period. The Johnnies' special teams came alive with a pair of goals to increase the lead to 5-2. Harren tallied his first goal of the year, which proved to be the game-winner, at the 13:02 mark of the second period. Conor Rooney '12 added a power-play goal of his own 7:17 into the final frame. Stout cut the deficit to 5-3 less than three minutes later with a five-on-three goal. Gross lit the lamp for the first time of his career, on the power play, at the 15:34 mark, and Pettit ended the scoring with his first goal of the year 3:28 later.
SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 10-5 all-time against Stout, but the series is tied at 4-4 in St. Cloud.
