A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: SJU (5-5-2, 2-2-0 MIAC) went 1-1 while in the Pacific Northwest over Long Weekend. The Johnnies collected a pair of goals before half resulting in a 2-0 result over Linfield (Ore.) in their first match of the trip Oct. 4. Junior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) deposited a rebound, off his own blast on goal, to the back of the net to give SJU a 1-0 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the opening half. A minute later, sophomore Josh Whitaker (Milwaukie, Ore.) knocked a cross pass off a defender that ended up on the foot of classmate Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) for his fourth goal of the season. The Johnnies fell to Puget Sound (Wash.) in a 3-1 decision Oct. 7. Sophomore David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) cut the deficit to 2-1 with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, unassisted. SJU out-shot Puget Sound 12-9, though the Loggers held a 7-4 advantage on goal. Corner kicks were 7-6 in favor of UPS and the Johnnies were called for offsides four times.
A LOOK AT THE ROYALS: Bethel (2-10, 1-4 MIAC) dropped a 2-0 decision at Gustavus Adolphus Oct. 5. The loss was the Royals' seventh by shutout this fall. Martin Manocchio leads the team, which has nearly been out-shot 2:1 (186-95) so far this season, with six points (3g/0a). Chris Scott and A.J. Syler have combined for a .642 save percentage and a 3.80 GAA in net.
LAST YEAR'S MATCH: Saint John's scored a pair of goals in the match's final 12 minutes to defeat Bethel 4-3 in a back-and-forth game last Oct. 12 in Collegeville. Coborn tied the match at 3-3 with his eighth goal of the season with 12:02 remaining, 1:18 after Manocchio gave the visiting Royals a 3-2 lead. Senior Andrew Johnson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) threaded a perfect corner kick to Heinselman, who laced a header to the back of the net 8:01 later. Junior Matt Carson (Waconia, Minn.) gave SJU an early 1-0 lead with his third goal in as many matches 6:36 into the game. Brian Holm tied the match at 1-1 less than three minutes later with a breakaway goal for BU. An own-goal tied the match for the Royals at 2-2 with 24:03 remaining and Manocchio gave Bethel its first lead of the match 43 seconds later. Junior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made a career-high 13 saves to improve to 4-5 on the season.
SERIES HISTORY: Saint John's holds a 24-5-2 record over Bethel since 1982, including an 11-3 record in Arden Hills. The Johnnies are 10-1-1 in their last 12 matches against the Royals.
