Johnnies Extend Streak to Six Games With 78-71 Win at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's extended its winning streak to six games with a 78-71 victory at Hamline on Saturday, Jan. 7, in St. Paul.

Sophomore Seth Marx (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) recorded the Johnnies' first double-double of the season, a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, and made five three-pointers (six of eight shooting overall) on the afternoon to lead SJU (8-3, 4-2 MIAC). Senior Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added 17 points, while senior Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) and sophomore Kevin McKenzie (De Pere, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) chipped in 10 points apiece.

Dior Ford led the Pipers (5-6, 3-3 MIAC) with 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Johnnies held their five-point halftime lead (33-28) in check by shooting 52.2 percent (12-for-23) from the floor and 19 of 23 (82.6 percent) from the free-throw line in the second half.

SJU is now 74-24 against Hamline under the direction of head coach Jim Smith, including a 34-15 record in St. Paul. SJU has won each of the last four meetings overall and five of the last seven in Hutton Arena. The victory is the 735th of Smith's 48-season career at SJU (735-513 career record).

The Johnnies travel to face Gustavus Adolphus this Wednesday, Jan. 11. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Gus Young Court in St. Peter.
