COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's extended its winning streak to five games with a 66-52 victory over Bethel on Wednesday, Jan. 4, in Collegeville.
Senior Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) led the Johnnies (7-3, 3-2 MIAC) with 19 points and five rebounds. Classmate Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) added 12 points. The two captains combined for a 13 of 14 showing at the free-throw line as the Johnnies ended the game 23-for-26. SJU is 44 of 51 (.863) from the charity stripe over its last two games.
Senior Kellan Dahlquist and Kyle Zimmerman, a sophomore transfer from SJU, led the Royals (6-4, 2-3 MIAC) with 11 points apiece.
The Johnnies out-rebounded the visitors 34-23 and posted a 15-6 advantage in second-chance points thanks to 13 offensive boards. BU entered the game averaging nearly 38 (37.8) rebounds per game.
With the win, head coach Jim Smith improves to 734-513 (.589) in 48 seasons at SJU.
SJU travels to face Hamline (5-5, 3-2 MIAC) this Saturday, Jan. 7. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Hutton Arena in St. Paul.
Notes: Smith improved to 50-22 all-time against Bethel, including a 30-8 record in Collegeville…the Johnnies have now won five straight against the Royals and six of the last eight in Sexton Arena…Barmore has now tallied double-digit points in eight of SJU's 10 games this season.
