ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's freshman Josh Gaughan (Buffalo, Minn.) tallied two goals and junior J.D. Wells (Anoka, Minn.) made 20 saves in his third start of the season as the Johnnies earned a 2-1 win over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Jan. 21, in St. Cloud.
Following a scoreless first period and most of the second, Gaughan put the Johnnies (5-9-2, 3-4-0 MIAC) on the scoreboard with 2:29 left. Freshmen John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) and Dave Mylrea (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
Concordia (8-7-3, 4-3-2 MIAC) tied the game with a power-play goal from Pat Deitz with 2:55 left in the game, but Gaughan lit the lamp with his sixth goal of the season 40 seconds later. Haeg and sophomore Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) earned the assists. The assist was Haeg's 15th of the season and 18th point overall.
Gaughan, Gross and Haeg have now combined for 15 points (6g/9a) in the Johnnies' last four games.
Wells improved his record to 2-0, as well as a 1.68 GAA and a .928 save percentage in four games in net this season.
SJU hosts Concordia for the series' second game for Youth Hockey Day at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. All area youth hockey players wearing his or her jersey gain free admittance. Fans will also be able to skate with the Johnnies following the game.
