A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's finished third against a pair of Division I schools, Colorado and Wyoming, on Jan. 7 in Mesa, Ariz. Senior Josh Seaburg (Moorhead, Minn.) finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.88, 0:00.71 from the win. Sophomore J.D. Quinby (Plymouth, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) took third in the 100-yard backstroke (59.38) and senior Jesse Otis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) broke through to claim third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.24). The time is good for 11th in the MIAC.
Freshman Logan Arnold (Moorhead, Minn.) and senior Alexander Evich (Alexandria, Minn.) finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.08) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.76), respectively. Sophomore Connor Triggs (Edina, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) took fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (49.80). Freshmen Nick Hamel (Shoreview, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and Joe Duxbury (Long Lake, Minn./Orono) finished 4 (56.43)-5 (57.00) in the 100-yard butterfly.
A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: Carleton lost to Gustavus Adolphus 186-112 in its first dual meet of the season Jan. 7. Carleton won six events, including a pool record-tying performance by junior Erik Klontz in the 50-yard freestyle. Klontz touched the wall at 20.80, matching the Lund Center standard set in 2007. He later added a first-place result in the 100-yard freestyle (47.62). Klontz earned MIAC Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week honors for the performance. Junior Mamoru Kanazawa was Carleton's other double winner. He took first in the 100-yard backstroke (55.66) and 500-yard freestyle (5:02.99). Senior Djem Kissiov added a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.53) and combined with Kanazawa, Klontz and sophomore Benito Ramirez on the Knights' victorious 200-yard medley relay.
LAST YEAR: Saint John's earned victories in 12 events to win a home triangular against Carleton and Macalester last Jan. 15 in Collegeville. SJU accumulated a total of 699 points, followed by the Knights (596) and Scots (159). Senior Ty Nimens (Crookston, Minn.) won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.68, and later went 1-2 with classmate Jimmy Foley (Moorhead, Minn.) in the 200-yard freestyle. Foley claimed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:59.49. Otis won both the 100- (1:03.65) and 200-yard (2:21.21) breaststroke, while junior Ben Maakestad (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) won the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:05.15). Senior Wes Schlichting (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) won both dives.
