MEQUON, Wis. – Saint John's won its third straight match to start the 2011 season with a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) on Sunday, Sept. 4, in Mequon, Wis.
Similar to Saturday's 4-3 win over the host Falcons of Concordia (Wis.), SJU (3-0-0, 0-0-0 MIAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to allow a pair of late goals.
Sophomore Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) recorded two goals and an assist, while freshman Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.) tallied a goal and two assists for the Johnnies.
Coborn's first goal of the match, and third of the season, gave SJU a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Scudder and junior Ryan Fuchs (St. Michael, Minn./Rogers) assisted on the scoring play. Coborn added his second of the game at the 58:24 mark of the second half with assists going to Scudder and freshman David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake).
Scudder increased the Johnnies' lead to 3-0 with his first collegiate goal, the eventual game-winner, less than five minutes later. Coborn and Wee added assists on the play.
The Raiders' Santiago Onuchuku scored a pair of goals, less than seven minutes apart, late in the match.
Sophomore Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) earned his first collegiate victory with six saves in net for SJU.
The win concluded an impressive weekend for SJU, which has scored nine goals in its first three matches. The Johnnies scored 17 goals in 16 total matches last season. Individually, Coborn notched an 11-point weekend with four goals and three assists, while Scudder added five points (1g/3a).
The Johnnies return home to host Wisconsin-Superior for a 5 p.m. match on Friday, Sept. 9, in Collegeville.
