2011 D3football.com All-West Region Team
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University juniors Bobby Fischer (Plymouth, Minn./Osseo) and Jimmie Mattson (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) were named to the D3football.com All-West Region Team on Monday, Dec. 5. Fischer was named to the second-team defense, while Mattson was named to the third team.
A first-team All-MIAC selection at cornerback, Fischer ended the regular season as the MIAC's leader in interceptions (7), interception return yards (243) and passes defended (17). His seven interceptions are the most by a Johnnie since 2002 (10 each by Jeremy Goltz and Jason Pflipsen). Fischer also posted 35 tackles (19 solo) on the year.
Mattson, meanwhile, was named to the All-MIAC second team for the second consecutive season after leading SJU in scoring for the second straight year with a perfect 8-for-8 showing in field-goal attempts and 34 PAT's. He led the MIAC (conference games only) in field-goal percentage (100.0) and scoring among kickers (53 points). Mattson tied the Johnnies' school record with a 52-yard field goal Oct. 22 at Gustavus and averaged 60.0 yards on 57 kickoffs. He enters the 2012 season tied for fourth with 15 career field goals (15-for-15) and ninth with 77 PAT's.
SJU ended the 2011 season with a 5-3 record in the MIAC and a 6-4 overall record. Head coach John Gagliardi ends his 63rd season as a collegiate coach with a 484-133-11 (.779) career record, including a 460-127-10 (.779) record in 59 seasons at SJU.
