COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's broke a 1-1 tie with three second-period goals to defeat Concordia (Wis.) 5-2 on Friday, Nov. 25, in St. Cloud.
The Johnnies (3-4-1, 1-3-0 MIAC) outshot the Falcons 38-12 in the game, including a 27-6 advantage in the final two periods.
Junior Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead 9:48 into the game with his fourth goal of the season. Sophomore Jason Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) collected the assist.
Russell Johnson tied the contest at 1-1 with a power-play goal 1:23 later for CUW (1-7-1, 1-4-1 MCHA).
Freshman Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) gave the lead back to SJU with his third goal of the season from Pettit, who added his second goal of the night (and fourth in his last two games) 3:10 later to give the Johnnies a 3-1 lead.
Jason Johnson extended the lead to 4-1 at the 18:14 mark of the second period with assists going to the other two Johnsons, Phil and Trent.
Lukas Allen added a power-play goal for the Falcons 5:58 into the final period.
Senior Conor Rooney (Stillwater, Minn.) ended the scoring with a goal with under 12 minutes remaining, his fourth of the season. Freshman Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) was credited with the assist.
Senior Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made 10 saves between the pipes to improve to 3-4-1 on the year.
The Johnnies host Concordia for the second game of the weekend series at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
