MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Augsburg broke a 1-1 tie with a pair of third-period goals and held on for a 3-2 win over Saint John's on Friday, Nov. 18, in Minneapolis.
SJU stormed out to a dominating 22-10 shot advantage through the first two periods, but the Auggies tilted the third in their favor, 10-3.
Following a Johnnie penalty in their own offensive zone, Jamison Wicks gave Augsburg (3-3, 1-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 3:18 into the game.
Freshman John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) tied the game at 1-1 with the first collegiate goal 6:14 later. Senior Nick Roscoe (Eau Claire, Wis.) and sophomore Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) collected the assists for SJU (1-4-1, 0-3-0 MIAC).
Following a scoreless second period, the Auggies tallied a pair of goals in the third, 1:39 into the period and another less than six minutes later. The eventual game-winner was a slapshot from Trevor Doden that was far wide of the net, but it deflected off an SJU defenseman into the net.
Gross cut the deficit to 3-2 with a power-play goal, 6-on-4, with 1:59 remaining. Haeg and junior Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play.
Senior Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made 17 saves in the loss.
The Johnnies return home to host Augsburg for a 7 p.m. game this Saturday, Nov. 19, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
