Lead Escapes Resilient Johnnies, 5-4

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – St. Thomas edged Saint John's 5-4 on Saturday, Nov. 12, in Mendota Heights.

SJU (1-3-1, 0-2-0 MIAC) fought back to tie the game on three separate occasions but could not take the lead.

Tom O'Donnell gave the Tommies (3-1-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) an early 1-0 just 1:39 into the game.

Sophomore Jason Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) tied the game at 1-1 with his second goal of the season, unassisted, at the 11:34 mark of the first.

UST added a pair of goals to enter the first intermission with a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Josh Gaughan (Buffalo, Minn.) cut the deficit to 3-2 with his first collegiate goal 9:24 into the second period. Sophomore Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) and freshman John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play. He tied the game 1:31 later with an assist going to Haeg.

St. Thomas regained the lead with 5:58 left in the second period, but junior captain Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) tied it at 4-4 with a power-play goal 9:58 into the third frame. Haeg and fellow freshman Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) collected the assists. Haeg now has seven assists in his last three games.

UST's Chris Hickey scored what proved to be the game-winner 3:07 later.

Senior Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made 37 saves in the loss for SJU.

Six of the Johnnies' last seven losses have come by one goal.

The Johnnies return to action this Friday, Nov. 18, at Augsburg. The game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Augsburg Ice Arena in Minneapolis.
