Saint John's (7-6, 2-5 MIAC) hosts Saint Mary's (2-10-2, 1-6-0 MIAC) for its final home game of the 2011 season this Saturday, Oct. 22. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at George Durenberger Field in Collegeville.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's had its three-game winning streak ended with a 4-2 loss to St. Thomas this past Wednesday, Oct. 19. UST started with an early 1-0 lead 7:51 into the match before senior defender Sam Hautman (Apple Valley, Minn.) tied the game with his first collegiate goal at the 49:19 mark of the second half. UST regained the lead just 27 seconds later and would add another pair of goals to make it a 4-1 score. Freshman David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) added an unassisted goal with 2:33 remaining in the game to end the scoring. Sophomore Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made seven saves, all in the second half, in the loss for SJ, which out-shot the Tommies 23-18, though UST held an 11-10 advantage on goal (10-6 in the second half alone).
A LOOK AT THE CARDINALS: Saint Mary's had lost four matches in a row before tying non-conference Viterbo (Wis.) 0-0 in double overtime Oct. 19. Jacob Bina and Juamaine Venter led the Cardinals with two shots-on-goal each. SMU goalkeeper Chris Williams made eight saves for his third shutout of the season. Bina (3g/1a) and Venter (3g/0a) lead the Cardinals in scoring each with three goals apiece. Kameron McKeeth leads the team with four assists, while Venter boasts a team-best 32 shots. Williams has allowed 22 goals and totes a .766 save percentage in 1,318 minutes in net.
THE LAST MEETING: A goal from junior defender Ryan Fuchs (St. Michael, Minn./Rogers) 15:30 into the match, the first of his career, proved to be the game winner in SJU's 1-0 win over Saint Mary's last fall in Winona. Matt Anderson '11 made two saves in the win and recorded his fifth shutout of the season. The win was the third straight conference win for the Johnnies.
SERIES HISTORY: Since 1981, SJU owns a 24-4-3 record against the Cardinals, including a 13-2-2 mark in Collegeville. The series history includes a nine-game SJU win streak from 2000 to 2008. The Johnnies' 1-0 loss to Saint Mary's in double overtime in the series' last meeting in Collegeville (Oct. 24, 2009) was the first home loss to the Cardinals since Oct. 31, 1992 (1-0).
