COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's scored a pair of goals in the match's final 12 minutes to defeat Bethel 4-3 in a back-and-forth game Wednesday, Oct. 12, in Collegeville.
Sophomore Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) tied the match at 3-3 with his eighth goal of the season with 12:02 remaining, 1:18 after Bethel's Martin Manocchio gave the visiting Royals a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Joe Balder (Stillwater, Minn.) and freshman Lucas Wagner (Munich, Germany/Gymnasium Vaterstetten) assisted on the scoring play for SJU (7-5, 2-4 MIAC), which has now won each of its last three matches.
Junior Andrew Johnson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) threaded a perfect corner kick to freshman Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.), who laced a header to the back of the net 8:01 later.
Sophomore Matt Carson (Waconia, Minn.) gave SJU an early 1-0 lead with his third goal in as many matches 6:36 into the game.
Brian Holm tied the match at 1-1 less than three minutes later with a breakaway goal for BU (7-4-2, 2-4-0 MIAC).
Wagner gave the lead back to the Johnnies with his second goal of the season in the 18th minute from Coborn and freshman Ian Scudder (Sherwood, Ore.).
An own-goal tied the match at 2-2 with 24:03 remaining and Manocchio gave Bethel its first lead of the match 43 seconds later.
Sophomore Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made a career-high 13 saves to improve to 4-5 on the season.
The Johnnies return to action next Wednesday, Oct. 19, against St. Thomas. The match is set for 3:30 p.m. in Collegeville.
