COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's sophomore midfielder Matt Carson's (Waconia, Minn.) first collegiate goal in the 74th minute proved to be the game-winner as SJU upset No. 18 St. Olaf on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Collegeville.
Sophomore midfielder Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) dribbled the ball around the left end and centered a shot to freshman Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.), who then ricocheted a shot off an Ole directly to Carson.
Sophomore Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made seven saves to record his second shutout of the season for SJU (5-5, 1-4 MIAC). Harry Ullmann made eight stops in the loss for St. Olaf (8-2-1, 2-1-1 MIAC), which was ranked fourth in the latest National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) North Region rankings and No. 18 in the latest D3kicks.com national poll.
The Johnnies return to action next Sunday, Oct. 9, at Wartburg (Iowa). The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Waverly, Iowa.
