ST. PAUL, Minn. – No. 3 St. Thomas took advantage of a blocked punt for a touchdown and five first-half drives that started on the Johnnies' side of the 50-yard line to defeat Saint John's 63-7 on Saturday, Oct. 1, in St. Paul.
SJU (2-3, 1-2 MIAC) was held to a three-and-out on its first four offensive possessions and committed turnovers on the fifth and sixth. The Tommies (5-0, 3-0 MIAC), meanwhile, turned all six of the ensuing possessions into touchdowns for a 42-0 lead. The Johnnies turned the ball over on downs with 3:55 left in the second quarter and UST put together an eight-play, 55-yard scoring drive to make it 49-0 at the half.
UST's Fritz Waldvogel added a pair of touchdown receptions in the third quarter to end the scoring for the home team. He finished with seven catches for 131 yards and three touchdowns.
Sophomore Colin Moynihan (Edina, Minn.) ended the shutout with an 11-yard touchdown run with 4:10 remaining. He led the SJU ground game with 29 yards on three carries.
Sophomore Connor Bruns (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) came off the bench and completed 13 of 27 passes for 144 yards with two interceptions. Junior John Ries (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) was seven of 10 passing for 25 yards, but was sacked four times. Senior Brent Graboski (Woodbury, Minn.) grabbed seven passes for a team-high 71 yards. Junior Jake King (Mounds View, Minn./Totino-Grace) led the Johnnies' defense with nine tackles (five solo), including one tackle for a loss.
Colin Tobin added 146 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries for UST, while Dakota Tracy ended the day 12 of 15 passing for 192 yards and five touchdowns. Tracy also added 41 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Tony Danna made 10 tackles (eight solo), including 4.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and one forced fumble.
UST out-gained the Johnnies 446-246, including a 225-57 advantage on the ground. The Johnnies were just five of 19 on third down and converted two of their six fourth-down tries. The Tommies held a 23-18 edge in first downs.
The Tommies' back-to-back wins over SJU are the first since 1986-1987.
The Johnnies return home to host nationally-ranked Bethel (3-1, 1-1 MIAC) this Saturday, Oct. 8. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville. St. Olaf erased an 18-point deficit to defeat the Royals 30-28 today in Arden Hills.
