SJU Loses Two-Goal Lead, Salvages Tie

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Saint John's let another two-goal lead slip away but earned a point toward the conference standings with a 2-2 tie at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Jan. 29.

Senior Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and junior Conor Rooney (Stillwater, Minn.) were responsible for both of the Johnnies' goals. Rooney tallied his second goals in as many games 6:55 into the game with an assist from Ellena.

Ellena gave SJU (4-14-1, 3-6-1 MIAC) a 2-0 with a power-play goal 3:13 into the second period, with an assist from Rooney.

The Cobbers (9-8-4, 5-3-4 MIAC) cut the deficit to 2-1 2:25 later and tied it with a power-play goal 53 seconds into the third period.

Junior Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made 31 saves for SJU, as the Johnnies were outshot 33-21 (22-12 in first two periods).

The Johnnies return to action this Thursday, Feb. 3, at nationally-ranked Hamline. The game is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at the Warner Coliseum, located on the State Fairgrounds.
