Two-Goal Lead Not Enough in Overtime Loss to Concordia

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Concordia-Moorhead erased a 2-0 third-period deficit with two goals in the third period and another in overtime to defeat Saint John's 3-2 on Friday, Jan. 28, in Moorhead.

Junior Conor Rooney (Stillwater, Minn.) gave SJU (4-14, 3-6 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with 1:06 remaining in the first period. Senior Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for the Johnnies.

Sophomore Tobias Linbro (Nykvarn, Sweden) extended the lead to 2-0 at the 15:21 mark of the second period, with assists going to sophomore Corey Kosak (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and freshman James Saintey (Rosemount, Minn.).

Aaron Wheeler cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 9:14 mark of the third period, and then Dave Velich tied it with his first career goal with 6:28 remaining in regulation.

Ben Payne score the game-winning goal 2:20 into overtime.

Sophomore #J.D. Wells# (Anoka, Minn.) made 15 saves in the loss, as SJU outshot Concordia 23-18 in the game. Both teams combined to go 0-for-11 on the power play. SJU held the MIAC's (conference games only) top power-play (25.0 percent, 10-40) scoreless on six opportunities.

The Johnnies and Cobbers return to the ice for a 2 p.m. game Saturday, Jan. 29, in Moorhead.
