SJU Soccer Hosts Carleton Saturday

The Johnnie soccer team plays host to Carleton for Homecoming Saturday, Oct. 2. The match is set for 4 p.m. at George Durenberger Field in Collegeville.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: SJU currently has a record of 2-3-3 (1-1-2 MIAC) with both of the wins occurring at home. Saint John's is currently in a four-way tie for fifth in the conference standings with five points. The Johnnies lost their last match at St. Thomas by a 2-0 decision on Sept. 28. St. Thomas' Nick Rapisarda scored both Tommie goals, both in the second half, the first at the 60:40 and the second at the 74:26 mark. Senior goalkeeper Matt Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made seven saves, including five in the first half, in the loss for SJU. Freshman Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and senior Kevin Saunders (Hastings, Minn.) collected a shot-on goal each.

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: The Knights (5-2-1 and 3-1-1 MIAC) enter Saturday's match on a four-game winning streak, including three consecutive shutouts. The three-time defending MIAC regular-season champions are currently in first place with 10 points. Carleton's last win was a 2-0 triumph against Luther (Iowa) on Sept. 26. Senior Tim Wills (6g/4a) leads Carleton with 16 points, followed closely by fellow senior Wes Elfman (6g/3a) and junior Ryan Cammarota (2g/3a). Senior Pete Semmer currently holds a .850 save percentage and a 0.73 GAA. 

THE LAST MEETING: The last time that these two teams met was Oct. 3, 2009, where the Johnnies fell to a 3-0 defeat. The Knights jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Ross Hamilton seven minutes into the match. Carleton then added goals from Miles Silbert and Taylor Ward at the 72-and 81-minute marks, respectively. Carleton outshot the Johnnies 26-7 in the match, including a 14-5 edge on goal. The Knights also had 13 corner kicks to SJU's two.
