COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University freshman Elliott Olsen (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) tallied his first collegiate goal and senior Matt Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made seven saves as the host Johnnies defeated Augsburg 1-0 on a rainy Wednesday, Sept. 15, in Collegeville.
Senior #J.C. Artavia# (White Bear Lake, Minn.) won the corner kick from freshman Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and released a shot, but it was blocked by an Auggie player. The ricochet went directly to Olsen, who then dribbled into the box and unleashed a shot to the far right corner 31:15 into the match.
The shutout is the second for Anderson and improves his record to 1-1-1 on the season.
The Johnnies are now 27-3-1 against the Auggies (4-2-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) since 1981, including a 12-1-1 mark in Collegeville. During that same span, SJU is now 20-8-2 in the season's first conference match, with an 11-5-1 record at home.
The win was the first home conference victory for an SJU head soccer coach, other than Pat Haws, since Sept. 28, 1977. Coincidentally, the match was a 2-1 decision over Augsburg.
SJU (2-1-1, 1-0-0 MIAC) travels to face St. Olaf this Saturday, Sept. 18. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Northfield.
