Johnnie Soccer Hosts Augsburg for MIAC Opener Wednesday

Saint John's (1-1-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) begins MIAC play when it hosts Augsburg this Wednesday, Sept. 15. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at George Durenberger Field in Collegeville.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Head Coach John Haws earned his first career victory as the host Johnnies defeated Cornell (Iowa) 4-1 on Sept. 5. Sophomore midfielder Andrew Johnson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored two goals, 1:29 apart, and assisted on another. Senior midfielder Clash Lo (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) put the Johnnies up 1-0. #J.C. Artavia# (White Bear Lake, Minn.) recorded the second goal for Saint John's five minutes into the second half. Johnson scored his first goal 22 minutes into the second half and followed that up with another goal, 1:29 minutes later. Junior goaltender Mike Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) made four saves and earned his first career win. Saint John's used 25 different players and outshot Cornell 42-12 in the game. 

A  LOOK AT THE AUGGIES: Augsburg (4-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAC) has won three of its last four matches, all of which have been shutouts. The Auggies' only loss was a 4-2 decision to Whitworth (Wash.) on Sept. 5. Augsburg dominated possession the majority of the match and outshot Clarke 25-2 in the 1-0 victory. Augsburg freshman goalkeeper Clayton Lynch started his second collegiate game and only had to make one save to earn his second shutout of the year. Sophomore Chad Gilmer scored the game's only goal six minutes into the second half. 

THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's fell to Augsburg 4-2 in last season's conference opener. Each team scored twice thru the first 15:10 of the match. The Johnnies scored first with an unassisted goal from midfielder Kevin Saunders (Hastings, Minn.) 3:19 into the half. Gilmer tied the game for the Auggies with a goal 35 seconds later. Midfielder Colin Hall (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored at the 13:24 mark of the first half giving the lead back to Saint John's, before Augsburg's Ahmed Gobana scored a goal 1:46 later to tie the game and then tallied another goal 20:58 to give Augsburg its first lead. The Auggies added an insurance goal in the second half.
