SJU Alum to Compete at U.S. Track & Field Championships

Tom Engwall, a 2003 graduate of Saint John's University, will compete in this weekend's U.S. Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Engwall qualified for his second U.S. Championship in the javelin with a throw of 72.09 meters (236 feet-6 inches) at the Texas Relays in April. 

Engwall, who competes at noon on Sunday, June 27, is seeded 16th in this year's U.S. Championship.  

Engwall was a 2003 All-American for the Johnnies after only two years of throwing the javelin. After graduating from SJU in 2003, Engwall attended graduate school at the University of Texas and competed in the javelin for the Longhorns with his remaining year of NCAA eligibility. In 2004. he won the Big 12 Championship and competed in the NCAA Division I Championships. He qualified for and competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials, where he finished 20th in 2004. 

He was also a member of the SJU football team from 1999-2002 and started at left tackle on the 2001 and 2002 national semifinalist teams. Engwall currently works for a medical device company in the Austin, Texas area.

The U.S. Track and Field Championships will be broadcast at 1 p.m. Sunday on ESPN, and at 3 p.m. on NBC.
