MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's ended its 2009-10 season with an 86-75 loss at Augsburg in the MIAC Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Minneapolis.
SJU, which ends its season with a 14-12 overall record (11-9 MIAC), shot 62.5 percent (20-32) from inside the arc, but just 28.0 percent (7-25) from three-point range; a far cry from its season average of 40.6 percent.
The Johnnies were within five points at 59-54 with 9:20 remaining. Augsburg, however, made four consecutive shots, including three three-pointers, to build a 14-point lead. SJU clawed back to within seven points but the Auggies answered with another three-pointer and steady free-throw shooting to seal the win. Augsburg ended the contest 21 of 24 (.875) from the charity stripe, including a 14-for-15 mark in the final 3:21 of regulation. The home team entered the game shooting 71.3 percent from the free-throw line.
Sophomore Max McHugh (Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) hit two three-pointers in the game's final minute to cut the final deficit to 11.
Junior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) led all scorers with 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting. He also added seven rebounds and four assists. Junior Sam Blank (Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter) followed with 18 points, including 10 in the game's first 5:49.
David Olson led four Auggies in double-figures with 18 points, while Matthew Quammen tallied 15 points on five three-pointers.
With the loss, SJU head coach Jim Smith ends his 46th season with a 713-499 (.588) career record.
Burtzel ends his junior campaign as the team's leader in shooting percentage (.635), rebounding (9.7 rpg.), assists (121), steals (41) and scoring (13.6 ppg.).
