WINONA, Minn. – Saint John's University sophomore Conor Rooney (Stillwater, Minn.) recorded three points (2g/1a) and freshman Adam Andersson (Pixbo, Sweden) made 18 saves as the Johnnies completed a weekend sweep of Saint Mary's with a 4-0 victory on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Winona.
Rooney gave SJU (8-11-4, 4-8-2) a 1-0 lead 11:24 into the contest with assists going to sophomore Nick Streine (Stillwater, Minn.) and freshman Axel Wikstrom (Stockholm, Sweden).
Freshman Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) increased the lead to 2-0 with his sixth goal of the season, an unassisted power-play tally with 1:25 left in the second period.
Junior Pat McClure (Maple Plain, Minn.) then notched his second goal of the season 9:30 into the final period. Rooney and freshman Kevin Blackley (Plymouth, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
Rooney ended the scoring with his eighth goal of the season with just 37 second left in regulation.
The shutout was Andersson's first of his collegiate career and the third by a Johnnie goaltender this season.
The Johnnies out-shot SMU (1-21-1, 1-13-0 MIAC) 34-18 in the game, including an 11-1 advantage in the first period alone. The Cardinals were 0-for-7 on the power play as the two teams combined for 18 penalties.
SJU returns home to host St. Olaf this Friday, Feb. 19. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. All area youth hockey players, and their parents, can gain free admittance if the youngster wears his or her hockey jersey to the game. A free skate will be held with members of the SJU hockey team following the game.
