Johnnie Hockey Posts 5-2 Victory

WINONA, Minn. – Saint John's returned to the win column with a 5-2 victory at Saint Mary's on Friday, Feb. 12, in Winona.

The Cardinals (1-20-1, 1-12-0 MIAC) took an early 1-0 lead 6:37 into the contest with a goal from Nate Percy, his first of the season.

The Johnnies answered with three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) started the flurry with a power-play goal, his seventh tally of the season, less than five minutes later. Junior Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) and senior Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU (7-11-4, 3-8-2 MIAC).

Gilbert then tallied his 10th goal of the season four minutes later to give SJU a 2-1 lead. Senior Gabriel Harren (Warroad, Minn.) and junior Pat McClure (Maple Plain, Minn.) were credited with the assists.

Harren extended the lead to 3-1 at the 8:16 mark of the second period with an assist going to sophomore Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.).

SMU's A.J. Woodard recorded his first goal of the season, on the man advantage, 8:30 later to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The third period belonged to the Johnnies, however.

Harren lit the lamp for the second time 7:44 into the third frame. Palmiscno and fellow freshman Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) recorded assists on the play.

Freshman Axel Wikstrom (Stockholm, Sweden) netted his first career goal to end the scoring with seven minutes left in regulation.

Senior Stu Van Ess (Kewaskum, Wis.) made 25 saves to improve his record to 5-5-3 on the year.

The Johnnies and Cardinals will face-off again at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, in Winona.
