MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Augsburg broke a 3-3 tie with three third-period goals, including an empty-netter, in a 6-3 win over Saint John's on Friday, Dec. 3. The game started 30 minutes late due to the wintry weather.
Augsburg (5-3-1, 1-2-0 MIAC) took a 1-0 lead at the 10:25 mark of the opening period on an unassisted goal, via an SJU turnover, from Joel Sauer.
Sophomore
Joe Harren (Warroad, Minn.) tied the game at 1-1 with his third goal in as many games, on the power play, 1:20 into the second period. Fellow sophomore
Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) and freshman
Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU (2-9, 2-3 MIAC).
Sauer tallied his second goal of the game with 2:50 left in the second period, and B.J. McClellan built the Auggies' lead to 3-1 with another tally 54 seconds later.
The Johnnies stormed back to tie the game at 3-3 with a pair of goals in the first 6:26 of the third period. Senior
Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) cut the deficit to 3-2 with an assist going to Harren. Senior
Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) tied the game 3:18 later with his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Johnson and junior
Conor Rooney (Stillwater, Minn.) were credited with the assists.
SJU's momentum swing was short-lived, however, as Trevor Doden gave the lead back to Augsburg for the last time just nine seconds later.
Nick Guran padded the lead at the 13:37 mark of the third, and added an empty-net goal with 26 seconds remaining.
Junior
Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made 24 saves in the loss, as the Johnnies were outshot 30-25.
SJU returns home to host Augsburg at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
