Johnnies End 2010 Season at Home vs. Concordia Saturday

The Johnnie soccer team ends its 2010 season by playing host to Concordia-Moorhead this Saturday, Oct. 30. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m. at George Durenberger Field in Collegeville.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (5-6-4, 4-3-2 MIAC) lost a gut-wrenching, 4-3 decision in double-overtime to Macalester this past Tuesday, Oct. 26. Macalester's Erik Johnson scored his first goal of the season with 1:13 left in the second overtime to erase a 3-1 halftime deficit and give the Scots the lead atop the MIAC standings. Freshman Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) gave SJU an early 1-0 lead with the first of three first-half goals just 10:37 into the match. Macalester's Stephen Murphy-Logue tied the match at 1-1 in the 25th minute, before Coborn answered 1:53 later to regain the lead for SJU. Seniors #A.J. Sollom# (Roberts, Wis./River Falls) and #J.C. Artavia# (White Bear Lake, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play. Coborn added another with 3:03 remaining in the first half, with an assist going to freshman Joe Balder (Stillwater, Minn.). Robin Forslund cut the deficit to 3-2 7:14 into the second half and Taylor Rasmussen tied the game at 3-3 with his 11th goal of the season 10 minutes later. Coborn had an opportunity for his fourth goal of the game on a penalty kick with under 25 minutes left in regulation, but his shot went wide right. Senior Matt Anderson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) made 12 saves in the loss.

A LOOK AT THE COBBERS: Concordia (12-4-1, 6-2-1 MIAC) enter this weekend's contest on the verge of earning its first-ever berth to the MIAC playoffs and has won nine of its last 11 games. In their most recent match, the Cobbers fell to the Washington University (Mo.) by a score of 2-0. Six minutes into the game, junior Riley McGlynn, the MIAC's leading scorer (all games) was knocked out of the game after being hit in the head by the Bears goalie. Freshman goalkeeper Peter Runquist enters the regular-season finale with an 11-4-1 record despite carding a 1.59 GAA and a .747 save percentage.

THE LAST MEETING: The Johnnies fell 4-0 at Concordia on Oct. 31 of last year. The Cobbers took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute and then scored again in the 28th, 55th and 69th minutes to finish the season with a 10-game win streak and an eight-game shutout streak. The loss against the Cobbers broke the Johnnies' seven-game win streak in the series.
