Johnnie Swimming and Diving Travels to Macalester Invite This Friday and Saturday

The Saint John's swimming and diving team returns to action at the Macalester Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30. - Directions

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: SJU claimed wins in six events, including the 200-yard freestyle relay in a close dual at St. Cloud State, 164.5-117.5, on Saturday, Jan. 23. Junior Michael Williams (Maple Grove, Minn.) won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.40, while sophomore Josh Seaburg (Moorhead, Minn.) claimed first in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.81) and 200-yard individual medley (2:06.96). Junior Marcus Rien (Richmond, Minn./Rocori) won the 1-meter dive (234.25), while sophomore Wes Schlichting (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) took second. The two flip-flopped the honors in the 3-meter dive. 

A LOOK AT THE SCOTS: Macalester placed third out of four participating teams at the St. Catherine University Invitational on Saturday. St. Thomas won the team trophy, while Wisconsin-River Falls beat the Scots for runner-up honors. Jeff Yamashita won the 50-yard freestyle in addition he placed third in the 100 freestyle (50.48) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (56.37). Ted Metz placed third in the 200 freestyle (2:04.09) and 1650-yard freestyle (19:04.41), and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.47)

LAST YEAR'S MEET: Saint John's claimed seven wins enroute to a first-place finish out of five teams at the 2009 Macalester Invitational. Williams won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.69) and 200-yard individual medley (2:03.41) to lead the Johnnies. Sophomore Jimmy Foley (Moorhead, Minn.) won the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.50), while junior Andy Happe (Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.44). Sophomore Jesse Otis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) took first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.65), while Rien won the 1-meter diving competition (422.40). The 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Foley, Williams, Michael Dempsey and junior Nate Schwichtenberg (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) took first with a time of 3:21.40.
