Johnnies Return to Pool With Dual at Carleton Saturday

The Saint John's swimming and diving team travels to Carleton this Saturday, Jan. 16. The dual meet is scheduled for 11 a.m. in Northfield. - Watch Live

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's finished fourth at the annual CSB/SJU Winter Invitational held Jan. 9 in Collegeville. SJU claimed Top Five or better 14 times, including a pair of second-place finishes in the 200-yard medley (1:39.6) and 800-yard freestyle relays (7:14.8). Sophomore Kelley Burg (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart) won the 3-meter dive (237.5) and finished third in the 1-meter dive (224.15), while fellow sophomore Wes Schlichting (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) took second and third in the 1- (243.65) and 3-meter dives (215.15), respectively. Sophomore Ty Nimens (Crookston, Minn.) claimed second place in the 400-yard individual medley (4:19.37) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.1). Sophomore Josh Seaburg (Moorhead, Minn.) finished right behind Nimens in the 400-yard individual medley (4:23.8) and claimed fifth place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.16). Sophomore Jesse Otis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) third in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.6), while junior Andy Happe (Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) captured fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (56.17). Junior Michael Williams (Maple Grove, Minn.) finished fifth in both the 50- (22.31) and 100-yard (49.77) freestyle races.

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: Carleton is coming off of a first-place finish at the Saint Mary's Triangular on Jan. 9.  Freshman Mamoru Kanazawa accounted for three of the Knights' six first-place victories, as well as juniors Andrew Mering and Eric Brenner.  Mering finished first in the 100-yard backstroke, while Brenner won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.  Before taking on the Johnnies, the Knights will face Gustavus Adolphus on Friday Jan. 15.

LAST YEAR'S MEETING: Saint John's earned nine wins in last year's meet against Carleton on Jan. 17, with a 155-143 dual defeat. Fresh off of his two wins in a dual against St. Cloud State the night before, sophomore Jimmy Foley (Moorhead, Minn.) won both the 200- (1:48.75) and 500-yard freestyle (5:04.68) events. Nimens won the 100- (53.89) and 200-yard butterfly (2:00.76) events, while Williams claimed wins in the 50- (22.26) and 100-yard freestyle (49.30) events. Andy Happe won the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.37), while junior Marcus Rien (Richmond, Minn./Rocori) recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 274.60 in the 1-meter dive. The 400-yard medley relay team consisting of Happe, Nimens, Williams and Otis won with a time of 3:38.74
