CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Saint John's dropped both of its dual matches to finish eighth out of 16 teams in the second day of the elite NWCA/Cliff Keen Division III National Duals on Sunday, Jan. 10, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. SJU lost to No. 9 Concordia-Moorhead (22-13) and No. 16 Cornell of Iowa (25-20). The Johnnies surrendered six points each dual due to a forfeit at 125 pounds.
Junior Matt Baarson (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) went 2-0 on the day, including a technical fall in the Cornell dual, to finish the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record at 165 pounds.
Senior Mogi Baatar (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia/St. Benedict's Prep, N.J.) also went 2-0 Sunday to finish 4-1 in the tournament. Baatar, ranked No. 2 nationally at 133 pounds, earned a major decision against Concordia-Moorhead's Hieu Pham (14-2) and defeated No. 8 Nick Nothern of Cornell, 5-3.
The Johnnies return to action this Thursday, Jan. 14, against No. 2 Augsburg. The dual is scheduled to begin with the junior varsity at 6 p.m., followed by varsity at 7:30 p.m. in Sexton Arena. The dual will be broadcast live on WBHR-660 AM.
