SJU Football Defeats Gustavus, 38-10

ST. PETER, Minn. – No. 6 Saint John's defeated Gustavus Adolphus 38-10 on Saturday, Sept. 26, in St. Peter.

Gustavus took an early 3-0 lead on a 42-yard field by Tom Huepenbecker with 8:34 left in the first quarter.

Following a three-and-out, Gustavus' Elliott Herdina fumbled a 48-yard punt by senior Russell Gliadon (Fridley, Minn.) and sophomore Mike Bonynge (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) recovered on the GAC 14.

Junior Joe Boyle (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) hit fellow junior Josh Overman (Albany, Minn.) five plays later on a two-yard strike to give SJU a 7-3 lead with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter.

Junior Jakob Reding (Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored on an eight-yard run 3:09 into the second quarter to give the Johnnies a 14-3 lead. The play capped an eight-play, 85-yard drive for SJU (4-0, 2-0 MIAC).

Four minutes later, Boyle found Overman again, this time from 12 yards out, to give SJU a 21-3 lead.

A 33-yard field goal by Gliadon, his second of the season, made it 24-3 in favor of SJU with 3:24 left in the half.

Gustavus (1-2, 1-1 MIAC) found the end zone on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Becker to Herdina on its first possession of the second half to cut the deficit to 24-10.

SJU responded with a four-play, 35-yard scoring drive that ended on a 19-yard screen pass from Boyle to sophomore Jimmy Loonan (Waseca, Minn.). Gliadon's extra point made it 31-10.

Boyle ended the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown pass to freshman Harry Awe (St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) with 1:23 left in the game to end the scoring at 38-10.

Boyle ended the day 18 of 31 passing for 204 yards and four touchdowns. Reding led SJU with 85 yards on 15 carries, while Overman caught six passes for 77 yards and two scores. Bonynge and junior John Stanton (San Rafael, Calif./Marin Catholic) led the Johnnie defense with seven tackles apiece.

SJU held the Gusties (1-2, 1-1 MIAC) to 190 yards of offense, including 32 yards rushing on 28 carries, and forced 10 punts. GAC was 4-for-18 on third down in the contest. The Johnnies have now won 22 of the last 23 meetings with Gustavus, including each of the last 11 in St. Peter.

With the win, SJU head coach John Gagliardi improved his career record to 465-125-11 (.783) in 61 seasons overall and 441-119-10 (.782) in 57 seasons at SJU.

The Johnnies play host to Bethel for Homecoming next Saturday, Oct. 3. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville. SJU is 63-16-2 all-time on Homecoming.
