Burtzel Sparks Second-Half Run in 57-49 Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University sophomore wing Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) posted a double-double in the second half to lead the Johnnies to a 57-49 win over Concordia-Moorhead Saturday, Feb. 7 in Collegeville.

Burtzel totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds in the game's final 20 minutes, ending the afternoon with 16 points and 12 rebounds to record his second consecutive double-double and sixth of the season.

Down 33-27 with 16:59 remaining, SJU went on an 11-0 run to take a 38-33 lead with just over 13 minutes left.

Sophomore wing Sam Blank (Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter) and freshman point guard Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) finished with eight points each.

John Fraase led the Cobbers (8-14, 5-12 MIAC) with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Darrin Olmscheid added 13 points.

SJU shot just 39.6 percent from the floor in the game, but outrebounded Concordia 38-24 and held an 8-0 advantaged in second-chance points in the contest. The Johnnies also scored 15 points off the Cobbers' nine turnovers in the game.

With the win, SJU head coach Jim Smith is now three wins shy of 700 for his career with a 697-484 record in 45 seasons, all at SJU. The Johnnies are now 66-27 all-time against Concordia under the direction of Smith, including a 41-5 record in Collegeville.

SJU (12-9, 10-6 MIAC) hosts Augsburg for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off Wednesday, Feb. 11 at Sexton Arena in Collegeville.
