Johnnies Storm Past Concordia, 6-3

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Three Saint John's University hockey student-athletes tallied three points apiece and senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 34 saves as the visiting Johnnies defeated Concordia-Moorhead 6-3 Friday, Feb. 6 in Moorhead.

Senior forward Jake Hipp (Bismarck, N.D.) recorded two goals and an assist, while sophomore defenseman Brent Brodersen (Shakopee, Minn.) and sophomore forward Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) scored a goal and added two assists each.

A goal from Brodersen 3:56 into the contest gave SJU (7-12-1, 4-6-1 MIAC) an early 1-0 lead before freshman forward Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) made it 2-0 less than two minutes later with a power-play tally.

Concordia's Ben Nelson cut the deficit to 2-1 just over five minutes into the second frame before senior forward Pat Connelly (Birchwood, Minn.) answered with his 10th goal of the season 1:13 later to make it 3-1 at the end of two periods.

Nelson scored his second goal of the game 4:10 into the final period to again cut the lead to one goal for the Johnnies.

Wallgren then blasted a one-timer from Hipp at the 11:18 mark of the third to increase the Johnnies' lead to 4-2.

Nick Thielen netted his first goal of the season for Concordia (3-17-2, 1-10-2 MIAC) to make it 4-3 with less than eight minutes remaining.

Hipp then scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season, the second with an empty net, to seal the win for SJU. Junior forward Gabriel Harren (Warroad, Minn.) assisted on both scoring plays.

Concordia outshot the Johnnies 37-23 in the game, but was 0-for-6 on the power play.

The Johnnies and Cobbers square-off again Saturday, Feb. 7 in Moorhead. The puck is scheduled to drop at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
