COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus made six of its last eight shots to erase a seven-point deficit with less than six minutes remaining to defeat Saint John's 71-68 in the MIAC Playoff Quarterfinals Monday, Feb. 23 in Collegeville. SJU (14-12, 12-8 MIAC) missed eight of its last nine shots during that same span.
Sophomore Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) led all scorers with a career-high 21 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Freshman point guard Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) added 17 points, while freshman wing Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) posted 12 points and seven rebounds.
Robert Schmidt led the Gusties (13-13, 11-9 MIAC) with 16 points, including 11 in the first half. Sam Paulson chipped in 15 points and six rebounds.
The Gusties shot 59.1 percent from the floor in the first half, including a 7-for-10 performance from behind the arc, to take a 38-33 lead into halftime.
Down 52-47 with just over 11 minutes left, the Johnnies took the lead courtesy a 16-4 run before the drought struck.
