Johnnies Top Gusties for Smith's Win No. 699, Rematch Set for Monday in the MIAC Playoffs

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Five Johnnies scored in double figures as host Saint John's defeated Gustavus Adolphus 71-60 on Saturday, Feb. 21, in Collegeville. The win, coupled with victories by Bethel and Saint Mary's this afternoon, grants SJU as the No. 3 seed in the 2009 MIAC Playoffs. The Johnnies host the No. 6 seed, Gustavus, for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off Monday, Feb. 23 in Collegeville.

With the win, SJU head coach Jim Smith earned his 699th career victory (699-486 career record).

Sophomore post Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) led the Johnnies (14-11, 12-8 MIAC) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Senior wing Cole Isetts (Red Wing, Minn.) added 13 points and seven rebounds, while freshman point guard Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) added 12 points. Sophomore wing Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) and freshman wing Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Jesse Van Sickle led the Gusties (12-13, 11-9 MIAC) with 20 points, while Sam Paulson added 17 points and 13 rebounds.

SJU is 5-1 all-time against the Gusties in postseason play, including a 4-1 record at home.
