SJU Hosts Carleton for Saturday Matinée

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's opened its 2009-10 MIAC season with a 67-61 win over Bethel on Wednesday, Dec. 2, in Collegeville. Sophomore Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) posted 14 points, including 10 in the first half alone, while junior Sam Blank (Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter) added 14 of his own off the bench. Junior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) recorded his second consecutive double-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and added six assists.  Greg Meyer led the Royals (2-2, 0-1 MIAC) with 13 points, while Daniel Baah and Chris Vavra added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Bethel shot just 25.8 percent (8-31) in the first half as the Johnnies took a 32-22 lead after the game's first 20 minutes. BU, behind a .536 shooting percentage in the second half, cut the deficit to one point with 11:52 remaining and later three with 56 seconds left, but could not take the lead. With the win, SJU head coach Jim Smith improved his career record to 703-489 in 46 seasons, all in Collegeville. Smith is now 46-22 all-time against Bethel, including a 28-8 record at Sexton Arena.  Smith is 35-23 all-time against the Knights, including a 21-8 record in Collegeville. 

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: The Knights suffered a 55-46 loss to Gustavus Adolphus in their MIAC opener on Wednesday.  Junior guard Jeremy Sutherland leads Carleton with 12.8 points, 2.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game.  Senior forward Bryan Rosett follows with 12.3 points per game in addition to a team-leading 8.5 rebounds per contest.

THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's held on to defeat Carleton 65-63 on Jan. 24, 2009, in Collegeville. Sophomore point guard Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) led the Johnnies with 13 points and a career-high 10 assists to record his first career double-double. It was the first points-assists double-double for SJU since current assistant coach Pat McKenzie recorded 14 points and 11 assists against St. Olaf on Feb. 5, 2003. Junior wing Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) added 12 points off the bench, while Barmore added 11 points. Burtzel was one point shy of his fifth double-double of the 2008-09 season with nine points and 11 rebounds. Zach Johnson and Seth Jonker scored 15 points each to lead Carleton. – Box Score
