MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – Saint John's lost a tough 2-1 decision to St. Thomas on Friday, Nov. 20, in Mendota Heights.
Following a scoreless first period, UST's Parker Burgess tallied a power-play goal 1:35 into the second frame. Andy Singerhouse extended the lead to 2-0 at the 15:41 mark.
Senior Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) cut the deficit to 2-1 with his fourth goal of the season and first since his natural hat trick in the season opener 2:35 into the third period. Sophomore Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and junior Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU (2-4-1, 0-3-0 MIAC).
The Johnnies outshot UST 11-9 in the third period but could not capitalize on a 5-on-3 power play with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation.
Sophomore Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made 30 saves in the loss.
The Johnnies return home to host the Tommies (4-1-2, 2-0-1 MIAC) on Saturday, Nov. 21. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC) in St. Cloud.
