Johnnie Hockey Faces St. Thomas This Weekend, "PAC the MAC" Night Set for Saturday

The Johnnies travel to face St. Thomas this Friday, Nov. 20. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights (Listen Live | Directions). The Johnnies then return home for “Pac the MAC” Night at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC) in St. Cloud (Listen Live (in progress due to SJU Basketball) | Live Stats | Directions). Buses will be available for CSB/SJU students and will depart SJU's Sexton Commons at 6:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., and then leave CSB's Gorecki Center at 6:45 p.m. and 7 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's dropped a 3-1 decision to Bethel on Nov. 14, in St. Cloud. Following a scoreless first period, Bethel (2-4-0, 2-0-0 MIAC) took a 1-0 lead 11:42 into the second frame. The Johnnies (2-3-1, 0-2-0 MIAC) tied the game on a goal from senior Gabriel Harren (Warroad, Minn.). Sophomore Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and senior Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) assisted on the play. Kyle Dynan gave the Royals a 2-1 lead 2:06 later. Christian Fogerty tallied an empty-net goal with one minute left in regulation to end the scoring. Senior Stu Van Ess (Kewaskum, Wis.) made 20 saves in the loss. The Johnnies outshot BU 36-23 in the contest.

A LOOK AT THE TOMMIES: The Tommies are currently 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the MIAC. Last year, the Tommies went 12-11-3 overall and missed the conference playoffs for the third time in 24 years. Although the Tommies are challenged with a young team this season, they return four of their leading scorers; juniors Rob Johnson and Andrew Kappers, and senior captains Alex Arnason and Parker Burgess.  Kappers currently leads UST with nine points (2g/7a), while Johnson has five (2g/3a). Senior goaltender Joe Schraeder is 3-0-2 with a 2.39 GAA and a .898 save percentage. 

THE LAST MEETING: Saint John's and St. Thomas played to a 1-1 tie in the final non-conference game of the 2009 MIAC Showcase on Nov. 1. Sophomore Conor Rooney (Stillwater, Minn.) broke a scoreless tie with 2:11 remaining in the second period. Senior Jake Koehler (Ramsey, Minn.) and sophomore Nick Roscoe (Eau Claire, Wis.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU. The Tommies' Rob Johnson tied the game with a power-play goal at the 17:08 mark of the third. Van Ess made a career-high 34 saves in net. SJU had a goal waved off with 14:13 left in the third period and had three breakaway chances thwarted by UST's Joe Schraeder, two by Rooney, including a shorthanded opportunity with five and a half minutes left in the contest. – Box Score
