COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint Mary's scored a goal with 40 seconds remaining in the second overtime to defeat Saint John's 1-0 on Saturday, Oct. 24, in Collegeville.
SMU goalkeeper Jon Szafranski caught an SJU corner kick and quickly punted the ball over the Johnnies to an open Juamaine Venter, who floated a shot over the hard-charging Luke Nelson (Caledonia, Minn.) into the net.
Nelson made four saves in the loss for SJU (5-8-2, 1-6-1 MIAC).
The loss was the first for SJU at home against Saint Mary's since Oct. 31, 1992 (1-0). Saint John's is now 23-4-3 against Saint Mary's since 1981, including a 13-2-2 record in Collegeville. SJU had won each of the last nine meetings.
The Johnnies return to action Sunday, Oct. 25, with a 3 p.m. match against Carthage (Wis.) in Collegeville.
